Study warns of longer extreme heat periods by century's end_我的网站

一 |          (ECNS) -- Hot days worldwide could experience around four additional hours of extreme heat by the end of the 21st century under a high-emissions scenario, according to a study led by Chinese researchers.    Published in Nature Climate Change, the study found that traditional daily temperature indicators may overlook shorter periods of extreme heat, while hourly temperature analysis can provide a more detailed picture of heat exposure and associated risks.        Researchers from Sun Yat-sen University and other institutions analyzed global hourly temperature data from 1981 to 2023, combining observational records with climate model projections to assess how extreme heat exposure could change in the future.    The research team found that the duration of extreme heat increased by 62 hours per decade over the study period. Around 28% of extreme heat events occurred on days that would not have been classified as hot days based on conventional daily temperature indicators.    Under a high-emissions scenario known as SSP5-8.5, the researchers projected that between 2070 and 2099, each hot day could experience around four additional hours of extreme heat compared with the 2001-2023 period. Days not classified as hot could also see increased periods of extreme heat.    The study also found that low- and middle-income countries account for a disproportionately large share of both current and projected extreme heat exposure. Younger generations in low-income countries are expected to experience the greatest increase in lifetime exposure.    Researchers said the findings could help improve heat-warning systems, strengthen assessments of health risks and support climate adaptation efforts.    (By Helen Mo, intern Liu Shuangjing)                    。

By 24, she has invented a tool meant to quantify sincerity in love, the emotional equivalent of a laboratory test kit.It is a premise that feels refreshingly odd in the current streaming landscape, where romance dramas either lean towards trauma or play it safe inside formula. Here, Sofia believes she can eliminate chaos. The series, thankfully, has no intention of letting her succeed too quickly.                                         Sid and Sofia: Two Philosophies, One CollisionEnter Sid, played by Guru Lakshman with an easy looseness that feels entirely at odds with Sofia’s methodical worldview. Sid is a comic book writer who believes that life makes more sense in the quiet pauses between logic. In his words, emotion is the one thing that cannot be coerced into behaving.Lakshman has spoken about enjoying the role precisely because Sid lets him play with vulnerability and humour without turning sentimental. It is a performance built around refusal. Sid refuses to let science take away mystery. He refuses to acknowledge love as something that can be graded. And, eventually, he refuses to let Sofia hide behind her inventions.Padine Kumar’s Sofia is the opposite kind of creature. Sharp, exacting, confident on the surface, and terrified of emotional unpredictability underneath. She has described the role as instantly relatable because the character’s brilliance masks a deeper fear that feelings cannot be managed once released. Their presence helps the world feel lived in rather than conceptual, which is essential for a show that flirts with genre but ultimately cares about emotional truth.What makes Heartiley Battery interesting is not the science but the anxiety beneath it. In an era where compatibility tests, astrology apps, and algorithm driven matchmaking have become normalised, the series taps into a timely cultural itch: the temptation to quantify love because unpredictability is frightening. Sofia is simply the most extreme expression of that impulse. Sid stands at the other end, insisting that love’s value lies in exactly what cannot be predicted.The show rests in that tension, using humour, youthful energy, and moments of gentle wonder to explore what happens when a rationalist meets a romantic who refuses to play by her rules.If Heartiley Battery succeeds, it will likely be because it does not treat its sci-fi hook as a gimmick but as a lens to examine how young people navigate love today.
